X Gambling Content Ad Policy

X prohibits gambling ads except in countries it lists, and advertisers targeting those countries must first get certified. All four of our markets are listed, but the products allowed and the rules for affiliates differ in each.

In brief

  • "X prohibits the promotion of gambling content, except for campaigns targeting specified countries."
  • "Advertisers targeting the countries below must obtain pre-approval to run Gambling Content ads by first getting certified."
  • UK ads need a UK Gambling Commission license; affiliates and tips sites also need prior authorization from X.
  • In Australia only listed products are allowed, such as sports betting and licensed land-based casinos.

The general rule

X's Gambling content policy starts from a ban: "X prohibits the promotion of gambling content, except for campaigns targeting specified countries." For the countries it lists, X says "Advertisers targeting the countries below must obtain pre-approval to run Gambling Content ads by first getting certified." Some markets add a second step, prior authorization, which starts with a support ticket to X.

The page states no age rule of its own. Age limits still apply through the law in each market, covered in the guide to gambling ad age restrictions.

Three of these rows are marked restricted, because X describes its United States, Canada and Australia entries as permitted with restrictions. In the United States, advertisers must be US-domiciled and include appropriate disclaimers, and affiliates may not link directly to operator sites or allow betting in the ad or landing page. In Australia, X lists the allowed products: fantasy sports, daily fantasy, sports betting, online lotteries, licensed brick-and-mortar casinos and racing boards. Australian law separately bans online casinos and in-play online betting, as our Australia rules page explains.

What X's update log shows

X keeps a dated log of ads policy changes. Entries for our markets include:

  • February 2022: "Gambling affiliate and aggregator ads permitted in the United States, with restrictions."
  • April 2022: "Single-event sports betting ads are permitted with restrictions in Canada."
  • July 2022: "Advertising of online and offline gambling content is permitted for Canada, with restrictions."
  • May 2023: "Gambling affiliates and aggregators ads permitted in Canada, with restrictions."
  • July 2021: licensed brick-and-mortar casinos allowed in Australia; online casino-style gaming and online instant lotteries prohibited.

The log had no gambling entries for the United Kingdom when we read it. Dated entries across platforms are on the change tracker.

Affiliates on X

X treats affiliates differently by market. UK affiliate and tips or odds sites need prior authorization. US affiliates are allowed with restrictions, including the ban on linking straight to an operator. Canada needs prior authorization from X for gambling advertisers generally. Our affiliate advertising guide compares this with Google, Microsoft and Meta.

Questions

Do I need a license to advertise gambling on X in the UK?

Yes. X allows online casino, sports betting, bingo and lottery ads in the UK "provided advertisers are licensed by the UK Gambling Commission," after certification.

Can a US affiliate link straight to a sportsbook from an X ad?

No. X says US affiliates may not link directly to operator sites or allow betting in the ad or on the landing page.

Does X allow online casino ads in Australia?

No. X's update log lists online casino-style gaming as prohibited in Australia, which matches Australian law.
